Congratulations to Tim Robinson, winner of the 2016 Higgins/Molinaro Medal . T-Rob (64 votes) won by a single vote from Jason Young (63) with Tommy Black (54) in 3rd place.
Tim Robinson took home the 2016 Higgins/Molinaro Medal as Reserves Best and Fairest at last nights Presentation Night.
In one of the closest ever vote counts, Tim and runner-up Jason Young battled head to head over the course of the last few rounds, with 5 votes in the final game enough to get Robinson over the line.
The two close friends were joking and laughing as the count came agonisingly close, with Robinson saying he would've loved to have shared it in his speech.
Coming back to the club after a year off, Robinson had a brilliant year in the ruck and managed a handful of senior games during 2016. A number of injuries have set him back in his career, but a career-best season saw him claim his first B&F medal as he looks towards more senior football in 2017.
Well done Tim on a great year!
THE HIGGINS FAMILY
The Higgins family first came to our club in 1993. Barry had already enrolled his boys at Beverley Hills prior 1993. He was, up to 1992, President of the Wattle Park footy club. Both Wattle Park and our club were faltering, so Barry, living in Doncaster East, saw more potential and convenience in bringing the two clubs together, which happened for 1993. It would not be too strong a statement than to say without Barry and this merger our great club may have folded.
Barry bought across from Wattle Park players such as Adrian Anderson, Steve Black , Jumbo Jennings and a few more. Barry was made President in 1993, a position he held for 6 years, and the rest is history – from being down and out in 1992 to winning our first ever senior flag in 1993. The Club has never really looked back. Barry had great support from his wife Lesley, who with Nola Devine from 1993 to 2007 ran both the Canteen and cooked meals on Thursday nights for the boys. Barry was also a good producer having his 3 sons, Shane, Brad and Glenn all play with the Club.
Brad played in the 2007 premiership team and played over 250 games finishing in 2014 - one of our greatest ever players. Glenn played well over 100 games and played in both the 2004 and 2005 reserve premiership teams.
To have the Reserves B&F award named jointly after the Higgins family is thoroughly deserved by them as they will always be known as one of the great DEFC families
THE MOLINARO FAMILY
Alf brought his son, Adam down to play at Beverley Hills in 1993. Adam had been living in Tasmania so only played the one year at Beverley Hills in the Colts, winning the competition Best & Fairest . . . .not a bad start.
Adam started his senior career in 1994 and played until 2014 – 21 seasons of senior football – a truly great effort. Adam won both the seniors and reserves B&F, was captain of the seniors for 6 seasons and a member of our senior 2007 premiership team – proving to be a legend both on and off the field.
Sasha, Adams sister, came down to the club to support little brother Adam and being the dedicated and passionate person she is, joined our committee for many years holding positions as Secretary, ladies President and social co-ordinator. Sasha has never left the club, but we were pleased to see her more in 2015 being Bangers partner. Thanks Sasha for your great contribution.
Alf was President for 10 years, which is a club record. Most clubs battle to find a President and we have been blessed to have a great one for 10 years, which has given the club a great sense of stability. He is a bit of everything , cleans the rooms, helps behind the bar, time keeps just to name a few. No one in this room would know the amount of hours Alf has spent in his capacity as President.
Alf is a very social person – on one or two occasions too social but his charisma and personality has made our club a great and friendly place to be. I don’t know of any current player, ex player or supporter who does not love Alf – that says something about the man. Alf, in some capacity, will be involved in this club for the rest of his life.
Therefore because of these 3 great Molinaros the Club has decided to jointly name the reserves Best and Fairest after the Molinaro family – a richly deserved recognition of their great contribution to the DEFC
